Mt. Kailas, often called Buddha’s mountain and the navel of the world, is the holy mountain of Tibet. Around this ice-clad peak revolve the rich cosmologies of the four distinct religions—Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bonpoism—whose adherents annually have circumnavigated it via a 33 mile pilgrimage from more than a thousand years.
The 11th Century Tibetan saint Melaripa wrote, “The prophecy of the Buddha says, most truly, that this snow mountain is the navel of the world, a place where the snow leopards dance. This mountain-top, the crystal-like pagoda, is the white and glistening palace of Damchog…the great place of accomplished yogis…There is no place more wonderful than this; there is no place more marvelous than here.”
Both Hindus and Buddhists believe Mt. Kailas to be the earthly embodiment of Mount Maru, or “world mountain”, whose base rests in hell while its summit reaches the highest realms of heaven. Hindus also teach that Mt. Kailas is the source of the sacred Ganges River.
Too few in the West know of this place which is one of the most revered on the planet.
The mount’s divinity reveals itself according to what one is seeking and depending on from where (s)he is looking. In Point One it moves forward as the monk walks toward it on his journey to oneness.
